Among the African-American community, there is a definite discrepancy over what is usually considered beautiful. The media’s definition of beauty cannot be the African-American's expectations of beauty because it is different among every ethnic group. This website is intended to inform the public, especially young African-American females, of how the media has created different definitions of beauty. It will expose the different definitions of beauty and show the audience that they cannot be discouraged by one ambiguous definition.
About the Editor
I am currently a freshman at the University of Tennessee majoring in Accounting with a minor in Africana Studies. Because I am a darker African-American female, I witnessed the differences between being darker versus lighter growing up. After discussing the topic with some friends, the topic of "darker girls being less attractive than lighter girls" really began to upset me. I chose to dedicate time to researching the reason for this absurd idea and came with the conclusion that it derived from the past. Now I began to question what will happen to the next generations after me. Will they too be subject to color-ism? How can we stop this trend? I didn't find a definite answer to my questions, but I do believe this website could be the step needed to begin to answer many more questions about our ways of living and, in some sense, save the younger generations from the public scrutiny I had to go through. I hope you enjoy the site!
